Unveiling Surround ADAS: A new standard of safety and tech

Mobileye Surround ADAS is a new segment that tackles long-standing challenges in advancing driver assistance technology

Surround ADAS gives automakers a way to put these features in millions of mass-market vehicles on the road.

To select a driving assistance system today, automakers typically face a binary choice: either basic ADAS with standard features while being affordable for mass-market vehicles, or more advanced systems with multiple cameras, radars, processors, and ECUs that could deliver features like limited hands-free driving, but at a system cost that makes them suitable only for premium models.

That changes now, with the arrival of Mobileye Surround ADAS™. It delivers a vertically integrated solution for software-defined hands-off eyes-on driving using Mobileye’s advanced software stack from autonomous vehicle development, running on a single Mobileye EyeQ™6 High System-on-Chip (SoC).

By leveraging the latest advancements in AI, a suite of multiple cameras and multiple radars totaling up to 11 sensors can be handled by a single ECU, integrating computer vision, sensor fusion, REM™ crowdsourced mapping, driving policy and over-the-air updates.

The result? A breakthrough ADAS system that not only is designed to provide essential safety features, but also premium driving experiences within its operational design domain – like hands-free driving on various road types and smart parking – that are intended to meet both rising consumer expectations for highway automation and upcoming tougher safety regulations. And by lowering system costs, Surround ADAS gives automakers a way to put these features in millions of mass-market vehicles – with the first examples already slated to hit the road within a few years.

At the heart of the system lies software innovations by Mobileye, brought to life using advanced artificial intelligence techniques, including our compound AI system that blends end-to-end perception software with other key breakthroughs, designed to transform raw sensor data into precise, actionable insights.

By leveraging Mobileye’s experience in developing autonomous driving solutions and its SuperVision hands-free point-to-point driving system, Mobileye can raise the intelligence of regular ADAS features by integrating the core software stack with REM data and enabling over-the-air updates of new features over time. Some key solutions enabled in this software-defined approach include:

  • Eyes-on, hands-off driving on highway and selected road types (up to 130 km/h)
  • Surround collision avoidance
  • Lane support system
  • Low-speed acceleration control
  • Automatic lane changes

The software-first functionality also allows automakers to use Mobileye’s tools in new ways. For example, the hands-free driving can be tuned within safety parameters by our Driving Experience Platform, or DXP. Other software such as parking functions and driver monitoring systems can be consolidated on a single ECU in close collaboration with automakers to support functionality requirements. Additionally, in-vehicle displays can leverage the rich data flow generated by the system for new and smartly integrated ways of sharing information with the driver.

The system typically relies on a long-range front-facing camera, four short-range parking cameras, and a set of up to five radars, with the potential for additional sensors such as a long-range rear-facing camera. The first Surround ADAS design win with VW on volume models was announced in March 2025

While Surround ADAS offers hands-free driving on the highway and selected road types and advanced collision avoidance, it is distinct from Mobileye SuperVision™, which adds true point-to-point navigation, including urban pilot capabilities (in each case, within its operational design domain). SuperVision remains Mobileye’s premium eyes-on, hands-off driving solution, designed for automakers seeking a scalable path to eyes-off autonomy. With Surround ADAS, automakers now have a full spectrum of EyeQ6H-based solutions to make higher levels of active safety and automation available to both premium and volume segment vehicles.

Why the market needs a new category

Beyond technological advancements, this new ADAS category has emerged in response to several challenges faced by the industry, particularly high system costs resulting from an overly complex and fragmented supply chain ecosystem. As automakers push towards simplified, software-defined architectures, lowering the hardware complexity of a vehicle is a key goal.  Mobileye’s Surround ADAS meets that goal through a single ECU structure, ease of integration and, most importantly, best in class system performance.

These changes have also been driven by a demand for even greater vehicle safety. Consumers expect comprehensive safety features as standard, and regulatory bodies are enforcing stricter guidelines to improve road safety and further reduce accidents amid increasing congestion and driver distractions. For example, in Europe automakers targeting a 5-star EuroNCAP rating in the near future will need to upgrade to surround sensing systems, as regulators recognize how side-view and wide-angle cameras expand protection for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users in critical situations.

Ultimately, consumers are at the heart of this evolution. They desire the premium, hands-off driving experience popularized by high-end models to be democratized to a broader market. Limited hands-off driving in specific roads and conditions is the highest growing level of autonomy, with projections indicating that one out of four new vehicles will be equipped with these capabilities by the year 2030.

For automakers, this new category represents multiple shifts across the automotive landscape, all converging into a new chapter of ADAS capabilities. It’s an opportunity to bring the comfort and convenience of today’s premium driving experience to the roads at an unprecedented scale. With Mobileye Surround ADAS, automakers can deliver the advanced safety and convenience that modern drivers demand.
