Since 1920 Australia’s National Roads and Motorist’s Association (NRMA) has been assisting Australian travellers and rescuing stranded drivers with their trademark vans. Recently the organisation instituted a program through Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications and technology company and one of Mobileye’s local distributors, to install Mobileye safety technology in NRMA’s vans, giving its drivers an extra measure of safety – providing them extra protection while they’re out helping others.

NRMA’s drivers spend a lot of time on the road – an average 4000 hours a year. With all these driving hours, it’s especially important that these vehicles are equipped with state-of-the art safety equipment. This is where Mobileye comes into the picture. The Mobileye 6 collision avoidance system is a vision-based, AI-powered system that warns drivers of potential hazards, giving them time to avoid or mitigate collisions.

Mobileye’s system continuously monitors the road ahead and analyses the risks of forward collisions, unintended lane departures, tailgating, and pedestrian and cyclist hazards. All-in-all there are five life-saving alerts incorporated in the system:

  1. Headway Monitoring & Warning – Alerts when the distance to the vehicle ahead becomes unsafe.
  2. Forward Collision Warning – Alerts of an imminent nose-to-tail collision with a vehicle ahead.
  3. Pedestrian & Cyclist Collision Warning – Alerts of an imminent collision with a pedestrian or cyclist ahead.
  4. Lane Departure Warning – Alerts if the vehicle leaves the driving lane without use of the turn signal
  5. Speed Limit Indicator – Notifies of the new speed limit and if the driver exceeds it.

These alerts give drivers audio and visual signals, helping distracted or fatigued drivers refocus and assists speeding drivers with a visual signal, reminding them to slow down. According to Australian insurer Budget Direct, speeding, fatigue and driver distraction accounted for 59% of the fatalities on Australian roads in 2016, showing the importance of these alerts.

According to Telstra, “Most drivers have now had their Mobileye kits installed for six to eight weeks, and have already reported that they feel safer knowing it’s there… These systems will benefit the NRMA by creating safer driving conditions across the Mobileye-enabled fleet.”

Mobileye has an impressive record helping fleet safety around the world and in Australia. Winslow Construction Group conducted a successful pilot program, installing Mobileye in 60 of their vehicles, experiencing zero collisions during this period. In addition, Coregas, a leading distributor of hazardous products across Australia and New Zealand, installed Mobileye in their fleet, reporting no collisions during the pilot period and praising the technology for helping with fatigue management, prevention of lane drift and encouraging safe-distance keeping.

The program with NRMA has proved successful with drivers reporting they feel safer with Mobileye collision avoidance systems installed. Studies have also shown that Mobileye helps train drivers to drive more safely, another step toward preventing collisions.
